Mission Statement

The mission of Literacy Volunteers of Kennebec is to improve reading, writing and other literacy skills so each individual may reach their potential, and to promote and advocate for literacy for families and the community. 

Literacy Scholarship Application

Literacy Volunteers of Kennebec (LVK) is providing for this scholarship that originated through the generosity of Peter Townsend. Peter was an architect who, upon his retirement to Maine, requested that all proceeds from his work done in Maine be directed as a gift to Literacy Volunteers. Peter was both a great reader and artist. His legacy of kindness and generosity will live on. LVK is now continuing this scholarship through the generosity of multiple donors.

Theme

The submission must address the following:

Discuss in an essay or express in another medium, your Idea of America, and the significance of literacy in promoting and protecting that idea.

APPLICATION REQUIREMENTS 

This scholarship is open to students:

  • Residing in Kennebec County who are completing high school through any accredited program, including public, private, Residing in Kennebec County who are completing high school through any accredited program, including public, private, charter, or home-school education.
  • Planning to attend at least a 2-year higher educational facility.

Please submit one of the following:
1) ESSAY – An essay (300-500 words, Times New Roman font double spaced) that addresses the theme above; or,
2) CREATIVE EXPRESSION – A creative piece that showcases your personal experience as defined by
the theme above and may include poetry (typically 1-3 pages long); a video (e.g., a short film,
documentary, or visual narrative); or a digital storytelling project.

Two separate Scholarships of $500 will be awarded. The scholarship will be sent to the college, educational institution, or technical school after successful completion of the first semester with proof of second semester enrollment.

      The deadline for the Scholarship Applications and submissions is April 1, 2026.

LVK would like permission to share submissions—if you would like to give permission for LVK to share your entry, please complete the attached Media Release and return it with your application. (Scanned copies with signatures are accepted.)
