Literacy Volunteers of Greater AugustaSupporting Literacy in Greater Augusta, Maine

Each year many of our neighbors are positively affected by the work of Literacy Volunteers of Greater Augusta (LVA). From individual tutoring sessions to services provided to learners through cooperative agreements with other agencies, such as Goodwill Lifeworks and Augusta Adult Education ESL Program, our volunteers work hard to improve the literacy skills of adults who are seeking a better life.

Family literacy programming, where parents and children participate together in reading and writing activities, are becoming increasingly popular throughout Maine. Since children with low literacy skills often have parents with low literacy skills, encouraging these activities can help to break the cycle of illiteracy. In response to this trend, we offer family literacy activities at the Bread of Life Shelter and coordinate with Literacy For ME to hold family literacy events.

Of course, none of this would be possible without the generous support of our wonderful community.

LVA wishes to give special thanks to Northeast Bank and Kennebec Savings Bank for being significant sponsors of literacy in 2016-17!

We also want to thank the following generous businesses for their contributions to our Annual Appeal:
